From idea to reality

I had this bright idea once.

see, I was really into listening to podcasts that centered around topics that interested me.

and one day, it dawned on me “I SHOULD START MY OWN PODCAST!”

and that’s when the first seed was planted and the journey started.

I brought up the idea to whom would later be the 2nd co-founder of our podcast: Doc J.

After some brainstorming and research, we finally came up with the concept of our podcast show. we decided we wanted to talk about things that we already normally talk about anyway during our many long phone conversations: hip-hop music, the music business, pro wrestling and liquor.

Once we settled on the topics of the show, the TWISTED CRITICS was born.

We eventually launched our show, had great episodes, made many good moments and had many laughs.

eventually, things fizzled out and the show had to go on a hiatus.

but you know what it is about planting that seed that I mentioned earlier?

they NEVER stop growing and evolving.

After some time has passed, I’m glad to say that the twisted critics show has officially been brought back to life!

Now with the relaunching of the Twisted Critics the show has a brand new facelift.

I myself will NOT be returning to the show as a host, the show has perfectly capable people that can and WILL fill in my shoes, and I’m perfectly confident in this new iteration of the show.

Although (as of this writing) the show has just newly re-launched, they do have their pilot episode available to stream. but guess what?

They just recently released their official first episode, and it’s with THE original co-founder of the show: ME

Now I had a great time being on the show and hanging around with the guys, but after I did the show I had another idea.

well, if they had me on their show why don’t I return the favor and interview them on my platform as well?

So LifeOfANGO.com would like to present an exclusive blog interview with the new generation of the twisted critics.

ENJOY!

LOA Staff:
Welcome everyone to LifeOfANGO.com and we here appreciate you guys taking the time out to give us this interview. So to start this off, we’ll ask you guys this question –

What was the reason/inspiration to reboot the twisted critics podcast and what will you add to the legacy of it?

Doc J
2 reasons really… 1) Over the course of the last 3 years at work, I’ve been assigned the task of our call complaint line for Mediabase.  Through compliments of my boss/supervisor, that I’m good at handling irate/angry callers and educating them to where they at least get off the phone somewhat not mad… coworkers have joked/mentioned that THIS is what the podcast should’ve been about.  I finally listened and planned the show based on that goal.  2) I loved my time doing the podcast with you, the fun times, & reach we had; but hated being the only 1 working on all the tech/software/outlining/contracts of the show.  It was very time-consuming & ate into both my work-schedule/family time, so I got burnt out badly.  Having a team this time with staff members that can assist with multiple jobs has made the podcast not seem as over-whelming as last time.  Still a lot of rules/hoops to jump through for monetization, but this time I was able to focus getting/negotiated the contracts instead of doing every job needed.

I believe the reboot came from inspiration from me and Docs phone calls. We often would say we talk long enough for these conversations to be podcast episodes, he was right. The energy that we already had with one another made it a very seamless transition from you to me. I’m adding my humor and raw flair to every single episode from day 1.

When I met Doc he gave me a shot that I could not pass up, especially with an opportunity like helping him relaunch “The Twisted Critics” podcast. I hope to bring the music business and business literacy to my area of South Texas with my position on the Pod and help it grow and establish itself among other top podcasts in its genre.

LOA Staff: fantastic to know you guys have great intentions with this brand!

Will this podcast be just a hobby for you or will you try to turn it into a potential career/business entity?

Rapper AM
Everything that we do with Doc is going to change our lives, and we deem it something that we will make money from, so it’s definitely business from the start.

Doc J –

A = It kills 2 birds with 1 stone for us.  It’s moreso a “labor of love” that will be another couple streams of revenue to add to our business once the viewership goes up, as well as a podium to promote our own music to a much bigger audience.  I’ll still remain employed by Mediabase & an active songwriter myself though.  Similar to last time around of the podcast, this time we negotiated 6 monetization contracts BEFORE it even going on-air, so there’s already business/financial potential for the show before we recorded anything.

Candy –
I hope to eventually make this into a career and use the success of the podcast to help elevate other future projects I hope to be able to establish.

LOA Staff:
What are you offering to the podcast culture? What separates you from the rest?

Candy
I come from a predominantly Hispanic area with strong roots in Mexican-American culture so I hope to add some of that to my point of view and experiences as well as open up the possibility to have on Latin artists on the podcast. Making strong impressions has always been a strength of mine along with a very smooth and calm way of communicating to help establish and improve connections.

Doc J
The music business is rough & filled with a lot of misdirection & lies, and the public also has this crazy belief that radio is dead.

So our 2 goals for the podcast are:  1) with radio performing 32% better since Covid and is holding; showing how radio charts differ from the “popularity contest” of streaming; & how artists are making more profit than ever on this format.  And 2) is to provide correct legal music biz answers, instructions, help, advice, & predictions for music & radio success.

Rapper AM –
I Don’t necessarily buy into the idea of being different per se with podcasts. We are all individuals, so the show shouldn’t feel like anything that’s been done right now. The show in itself is something that separates us all from other podcast right now. Our individual flair and personality can’t be replicated so this is what sets us apart.

LOA Staff:
Great stuff guys, so here’s something, for anybody anywhere in whatever field they’re in, there’s always the top echelon of their industry that helps lead the way for that particular business and their culture.

If you can land any BIG guest interview on your show who would it be? And why?

Doc J
We have LOTS in plan in terms of special guests over the next 2 years of our contract.  But a big fish I’d like to hook though would definitely be DJ EFN and/or NORE.  I know our style/format will be compared to Drink Champs, and me being old-school I never want to be viewed as a copycat, so I think having them on-air would show their approval/support of what we’re providing & how we’re doing it differently.

Rapper AM
I’d Like to have a conversation with anyone that thinks deeply. Give me Joe Rogan, or Howard Stern, give me someone who will have us asking ourselves why the fuck did we book them? Orlando Brown lol. I’d like to have trouble interviewing if I could be honest.

Candy –
I would say, Big Sean. He was the first rapper I got into, and from years of listening to his music and being a fan I’ve been interested in his spiritual journey and how he takes care of not only his body but his mind.

LOA Staff:
Great insight guys on how you guys are handling this brand and how you all would like to take it further, so we’ll close out with one last question.

If you could land ANY big sponsorship deal who would it be and how would it benefit your show overall?

Honestly, for Twisted Critics I’m open to ANY product partnerships with our guests, that are items they have made/built (shirts, hats, clothing, CDs, posters, books, coffee mugs, bags, shot glasses, comics, board games, food, etc.) as long as their company’s public intentions/reputations align with ours.  And then outside of guests, I’d say any/all of the liquor brands that we often drink & support on-air, would be great sponsorship opportunities because they are a part of the show already (and we enjoy them ourselves) so we’d support each other.  Additionally, that’s the plan of the podcast with the Mead (honey-fermented wine) that I brew as a hobby.  It’s a unique, handcrafted, personal touch that NO other podcast does & a “product” that I’m passionate about, BUT to get a legal manufacturing liquor license in FL it’s $990 & yearly home inspections.  I’d like to get to the point 1st where the podcast show (and our music publishing company) can cover the fees & provide promotion for us to sell bottles of Mead for profit.

Candy
I think the biggest one we as a group would be happiest with would be an alcoholic brand sponsorship. I personally would prefer Indio to sponsor us but my favorite brand will be the one that contacts us first.

Rapper AM
I’d like to have any Gin Honey flavored liquor sponsor us. I’d drink it every show and get more eyes on their brands.
